Peres Owino is a Daytime Emmy-nominated Kenyan-American storyteller. Accolades came with her directorial debut, the 2014 docu-drama “BOUND: Africans vs African-Americans,” which won the Women In Film Lena Sharpe Award at the Seattle International Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Pan African Film & Arts Festival in Los Angeles.
Owino co-wrote “African Queens – Njinga,” which is currently nominated for Daytime Emmys in 12 categories; the most categories any program is nominated in this year; it was also nominated at the Buzzies, a recognition from the World Congress of Science and Factual Producers. “African Queens – Njinga,” was followed by co-writing the global hit, “Queen Cleopatra,” nominated for the 2023 National Film Awards.
Also for television, she most recently also developed the half-hour comedy “Inherited” for Warner Bros TV, and is currently working on a drama with Gaumont TV US.
Owino currently has two narrative features in pre-production, “The Boy and The Elephant,” and “The Basket Weaver,”, which was a Universal Studios GTDI Writing Competition finalist, and winner of the NYWIFT Writers Lab (supported by Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman).
Her most recently completed short film is “Stray”, produced by 20th Century Fox Digital as part of Hulu’s Best of Huluween.
Other recognized work includes her screenplay, “Seasons of Love”, which was produced by Taraji P. Henson and Lifetime TV, and was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Writing of a Television Movie in 2015.
Owino’s writing also includes theater; the following are her original works for the stage; CUT which premiered at The Walt Disney Concert Hall, REDCAT, and her one-woman show, BEAUTY FOR ASHES.
A classically trained actor, Owino is an LA Ovation nominee who has appeared in dozens of plays in both New York and Los Angeles. She’s played coveted roles like Hamlet in the LATC presentation of HAMLET: PRINCESS OF NUBIA and Lady Macbeth in the Coleman and Smith Artistic Company’s presentation of MOCBET. Her recent theater acting credits include the Off-Broadway production of SUPERNATURAL, BREAK THE WHIP directed by Academy Award® winning director Tim Robbins, and RED NOSES directed by Tony Award ® winning director Dominique Serrand. She has also appeared in several screen projects including the feature film “Default” opposite David Oyelowo (Selma).
Her voice has also landed her roles in films like Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” and Sasha Baron Cohen’s film “The Brothers Grimsby” and Hulu’s “The Looming Tower.”
Owino studied improv at the Groundlings School and stand up comedy with legendary comedian, Judy Carter. She performs Standup across Los Angeles. A collection of her writings are featured in her debut novel, “On The Verge,” published by Underground Voices.
